A high-ranking Russian general has been fatally wounded following an explosion in Moscow, according to an investigative body.

The event happened on Monday morning when an IED concealed beneath a vehicle exploded, resulting in the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov served as the head of the armed forces' operational training department.

Authorities stated that one line of inquiry suggests the alleged involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. So far, Ukraine has remained silent.

Site of the Blast

Officials have been dispatched to the site, which is reportedly in a southerly district of the capital.

Reports indicate the explosion took place in a vehicle lot near a residential building.

Series of Assaults

Since the onset of the large-scale conflict in Ukraine, a number of Russian military personnel have been targeted within Moscow.

This latest event echoes other serious incidents, such as:

  • General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a vehicle explosion in Moscow earlier this year.
  • General Igor Kirillov perished in late 2024 when a explosive hidden on a scooter was detonated remotely.

While a informant earlier linked Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such assertions are never formally acknowledged as a matter of official stance.

Hostilities has been marked by clandestine operations reaching into the heart of the Russian capital.

The examination into General Sarvarov's death remains active.
