An Kindness of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Man I Barely Knew Assisted Me Land the Role That Transformed My Existence

During the late 1980s, I was beginning a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a friend. Since my companion was considering pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had arranged a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a big multi-story edifice on the Manhattan's Upper West Side named International House. Setting down our luggage, we went directly to the canteen, where we grabbed food, took a seat, and started talking to other diners.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I my profession was, and I told him that I had recently completed my studies with a degree in science and had been performing experiments using an electron microscope.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at the institution – right next door to the school of engineering, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He suggested that I consider applying for a position with them. I laughed it off, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, more critically, I didn’t have a US visa.

The following day I went out exploring, returning to the canteen that evening. The man from Iraq approached me and informed me that he had set up a meeting for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but right away told my interviewer that I was without a work permit, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where everything seems achievable – she said: “That can be arranged. How soon can you begin?” I missed my plane to London.

I was employed there for three years. An advantage of the role was that I was granted no-cost classes at Columbia, and I took advantage to complete a postgrad program in international relations.

I lost touch with him and I don’t even know his name, but his selfless gesture transformed my future in so many ways. I didn't possess the confidence or self-assurance to approach someone at an elite institution and seek a position. Additionally, I had always wanted to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that tuition waiver.

What's more, that gig at Columbia resulted in a role in Europe where I encountered my beautiful French husband, with whom I now have four wonderful sons and daughters. That encounter altered everything. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m eternally thankful.

Can you recall the Kindest Gesture a Stranger Has Shown for You?

Whether it's cheering you up to transforming your future, we would love to know random meetings that have left a lasting impression.
