British Designer Antony Price, Renowned for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and performative fashion, most notably the soft-colored suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
His passing follows shortly after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by the late Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in shaping body-hugging looks established him as a "true original," according to the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he started creating ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including several ensembles for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: Central to his design philosophy.
- Dramatic Impact: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
- Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
- A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.
The industry mourns the loss to a true visionary whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains indelibly etched.
