American flight controllers are increasingly looking for second jobs and reporting ill, as they continue to work unpaid during the federal closure, the transport chief has announced.

"These professionals are becoming strained," Sean Duffy told Fox News on Sunday, as some flights were grounded on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

After the government shut down on October 1st, air traffic controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were told to continue performing their duties without pay.

But a number have been missing, leading airports to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has exacerbated setbacks caused by climate and additional factors.

Over three thousand American flights were postponed on Sunday, and Duffy said he expects the circumstances to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the pressure," Duffy remarked in an interview on a weekend program, adding that he had spoken to several controllers to hear their concerns directly.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I drive Uber, can I find another source of income to cover expenses?'" he added.

Duffy further mentioned that on the previous day twenty-two notifications at airports said flights would be delayed due to a shortage of workers - one of the highest since the closure began.

The US government shutdown reached its twenty-sixth day on the weekend, rendering it the second most extended shutdown in the past.

Duffy has consistently cautioned that aviation regulators would reduce the number of aircraft in the air if there is a shortage of security staff.

In his conversation, he declined to respond straightforwardly when asked if it was safe to travel by air in the US, and instead issued a personal plea to the professionals.

"I require my staff concentrating on the airspace, not on the monetary matters at home," Duffy said.

On that day, certain flights were grounded at LAX due to employee deficits, leading to interruption at the fifth most active terminal in the nation and one of the busiest in the globe, as well as additional travel extending north to the city of Oakland.
