Minister Confirms MoD Looking at Security Risk from Chinese Cars, with Personnel Told to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

A defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively looking into the potential security risks associated with Chinese cars, while staff have been instructed to refrain from discussing secret matters in all cars.

Safety Advice for MoD Personnel

In a recently aired interview on a radio station, a defence minister addressed reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to discuss classified material while travelling in China-made vehicles.

He stated that the MoD is “examining” cars from China within its fleets, but emphasised that security is a concern in all modern vehicles.

Our department has a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
However whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug MoD technology into their car, to avoid having conversations at a secret classification in any kind of vehicle, because of the increasing threats of eavesdropping that are present in all vehicle, to restrict those secret conversations in protected areas. This is a prudent and sensible thing for anyone worried about security.

When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to stop using all cars from China, Pollard responded: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”

Wider Defence Context

This revelation comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could allow China to switch off buses and bring disruption to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel was reportedly directing lasers at RAF pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.

This broader defence environment underscores the importance of robust protocols and caution in every aspects of official activities, including transport usage to discussions habits.
