The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Lighthearted Spectacle – But It Has Become a Cynical Way to Sanitize Conflict.
A recent initialism emerged a few months into the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Referred to as WCNSF, it signifies “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This term is found only in Gaza, per insights from medical experts such as child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is rare for doctors to care for a young patient who has seen the death of their whole family. But, there has been no semblance of normality regarding the widespread destruction in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been wiped out and the number of young amputees exceeds that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing ordinary in scores of doctors arriving back from a landscape of rubble with reports of children being systematically aimed at.
A Hell on Earth Regardless of a Reported Truce
Gaza remains a profound humanitarian disaster. Essential medical supplies are not getting in those in need, and groups like Amnesty International have stated that violations are still being committed. Officials disputes these accusations, consistent with how it refutes everything it is charged with. Meanwhile, while grieving children who lost parents are now enduring frigid conditions in improvised encampments, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from continuing with its stated mission of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to roll out a welcoming platform for Israel, even though a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, it seems, is what global togetherness manifests as.
The contest, notably prohibited Russia from taking part in 2022 due to the “grave situation in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza seems completely different.
Contradictory Principles
Overlook the circumstance that Israel was accused of unfair vote practices last year in what could be seen as an bid to manipulate Eurovision. Set aside the news that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that settler violence and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have surged. Forget the fact that global media are still prevented from independent reporting in Gaza. None of this, apparently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.
The Contest Continues While Ignoring Profound Human Cost
The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the current lifespan of a person in Gaza at present. The show may go on, but it will never be able to restore the whimsical pleasure it historically embodied. An institution that initially championed harmony has now become a cynical way to whitewash war.
