The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate in his campaign.

A Traditional Abode

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors since the World War II era.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core issue, did not confirm this decision right away after his triumph in November.

"The choice rested on our family's safety and the importance of dedicating all of my focus on implementing the platform on affordability voters voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.

Leaving Astoria

He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area famous for its diverse immigrant populations and culinary diversity.

"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying the best of New York City," he noted.

"While I may no longer live in Astoria, the community will continue to reside inside me and my efforts as mayor," he added.

Campaign Controversy

In his race for mayor, Mamdani linked his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.

But his rivals, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for occupying the affordable housing although he came from a famous family.

A House Not Always Used

Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side for his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a space for public city functions, and pushed for significant upgrades of the older mansion.

A Grand New Home

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will experience an environment very different than his modest Astoria digs.

Featuring cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.

Inside, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished consistent with the home's original era.

The compound, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, a policy where the city sets limits on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.

City residents see such units as essential protections as the price of rent rises faster than the means of many residents.

Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
