The people of Israel commemorate two-year anniversary of October 7th attacks as Palestinian ceasefire talks continue
Israelis have gathered around the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-initiated assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions continued in the neighboring country over an end to the conflict in Gaza.
The assault saw in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely deadliest day for Jewish people since the World War II.
Israel reacted by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are seen as accurate by the UN and other international bodies.
"Our bloodthirsty adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on that day.
He also pledged to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will never again pose a threat to Israel".
Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel
The national leadership rescheduled official memorials until October 16th - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still took place across the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the families of people who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was held in Tel Aviv. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was televised across Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a minute's silence was respected across the country.
Negotiation Talks in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' delegations convened in the Egyptian coastal city of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to discuss the conditions of the proposal.
A senior Palestinian official familiar with the discussions said that an evening round of indirect talks began at 19:00 Cairo time.
The source stated the earlier meeting finished without tangible results, because of differences over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not resume hostilities after the initial stage of the deal.
He commented that the discussions are "challenging and have still not achieve any major advancement," but noted that facilitators are striving to narrow the disparities between the conflicting groups.
Essential Issues in Discussions
- A permanent ceasefire
- The exchange of the captives still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Plans for humanitarian aid deliveries
- Future management of the territory
Civilian Reaction
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square previously, young a woman - whose brother survived the assault on the outdoor event, where 378 people were lost their lives and many more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - shared: "No location appears as home anymore and until every captive return not a single person will be secure."
"After we see everybody home returned, we can breathe again. Then we can commence recover," she continued.
Near the leader's official dwelling in the capital, people assembled to show their backing for the relatives of the abducted. Israel reports 48 continue in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be alive.
Demonstrator a participant remarked: "We must do whatever arrangement necessary for the hostages to be released. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be protected."
Surveys now frequently demonstrate that around 70% of Israeli citizens prefer the conflict to end in return for the freedom of the hostages.
Palestinian Situation
At the location of the gathering, grieving people assembled to remember the victims.
From the site, the noise of military attacks and explosions could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people reported the intense Israeli bombardment persisted.
In the main city, bombardments were reported in the morning of Tuesday in the west side district, Rimal and locality neighbourhoods and in the eastern district of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.
"As the evening falls, the dread comes with it," displaced Gaza City resident a mother, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli air strike earlier, described.
"Me and my three children are terrified of the bombings. During nighttime we are lying together, holding each other, particularly my youngest child who places his face on me all night."
"Continuously we look at the news to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be achieved and that the war will resume to us."
Health Crisis
The healthcare center in Gaza City said it had taken in the bodies of six people by the midday, including several killed in an Israeli bombing in the south part area.
Another medical facility in the south region of the city said another two dead people had been delivered. One of them was died by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get aid to the south, health workers stated.
