The Showrunner Shares He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Will End... For Now.
Vince Gilligan never anticipated that Pluribus would become a cultural phenomenon. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
With the first season of the popular series reaching its finale—and Season 2 officially in the works—the creative team reflected on the fan response and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.
Regarding the Tremendous Fan Response
One could easily to get distracted by the rampant praise and fan theories about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to steer clear of all that.
“It's like being an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I hear about it from others, and that's by design. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever intend to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”
In spite of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no way to avoid the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We don't try to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not changed by audience chatter.”
“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.
The Big Question: Will Vince Gilligan Know the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Considering the creative staff are not listening by fan response, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… in a way.
“There are some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to throw out a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I imagine we will be doing that.”
On the other hand, if all else fails, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.
“I keep pitching that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Alternatively, one could always use the iconic TV endings?
“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV.
