A extensive search and rescue effort is actively ongoing in the Caribbean Sea for a duo of unlocated sailing vessels carrying aid cargo journeying from Mexico to the island of Cuba.

Military Search and Rescue Operations Initiated

The Mexican government has dispatched navy personnel and military search aircraft to find the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were carrying at least 9 crew members, as stated by a military release.

The vessels had been projected to arrive in Havana on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and zero verification of their arrival, the navy said.

Background of Aid to the Nation

The Caribbean nation has relied heavily on Mexico's over the last several weeks, as the country grapples with multiple nationwide blackouts.

"The captains and crews are seasoned mariners, and each boat are outfitted with proper navigational gear and emergency beacons," an official for the convoy stated.

The nine-person crew are nationals of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Officials said it has opened communications with maritime rescue coordination centres from those nations along with their diplomatic representatives.

"We are working closely with the relevant authorities and continue to be hopeful in the crews' ability to safely arrive in Havana," the spokesperson added.

Previous Humanitarian Shipment

Previously that week, the Cuban authorities publicly celebrated and officially received a different ship that had carried 14 tonnes of donated goods to the country.

That vessel, called "Granma 2.0" following the name of the boat in which Castro came back to Cuba to start the armed struggle in the 1950s, delivered photovoltaic panels, drugs, baby formula, bikes and food.

Larger International Context

Charity groups and individuals have primarily led attempts to deliver critical assistance to Cuba since January, coinciding with the time a oil sanctions on the island nation came into effect.

International organizations have since warned of ""critical" lack of essential goods, with in excess of 50,000 surgeries cancelled in Cuba due to electricity supply constraints.

Diplomatic tensions have been ramped up over the past months, with statements from several representatives highlighting the delicate state of bilateral relations.

Responding to previous statements, a senior government figure stated firmly that "the governance model of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Reports suggest that early stages of talks had begun, although their ongoing development remains unclear.

The naval forces affirmed it was pledged to using all of the resources at its reach to find the sailboats and secure the security of the people on board.

At this time, there has been no public statement on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
